- Abstract: As it is known, data about suicide are not totally accurate, due to under reporting of these events. The possibility to analyse the quality of suicide data emerged with investigation "study of mortality of Brazilian women 10 to 49 years of age", performed by the Who Collaborating Center for the FIC in the School pf Public Health of the University of São Paulo. The investigation was sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, PAHO/WHO and CNPq (Brazilian National Committee of Researches). A sample of 3,297 female deaths, occurred in the first semester of 2002, residents in all Brazilian capitals, including Brasília, was analysed. The Reproductive Age Mortality Survey methodology was adopted to obtain information based on household interviews, medical records, autopsy and police reports. With these informations, a new death certificate (DC) was completed by a physician and, then, compared to the original DC. There were 44 original DC classified as suicide before the investigation and, after, it changed to 97 cases (an increase of 121 percent). It was detected an association between suicide and depression, besides others epidemiological facts. The results suggest measures to improve the quality of mortality data and, with actual facts, actions to improve the woman's health can be provided
