- Abstract: Studies of organic geochemistry in marine sediments provide information about paleoenvironments and paleoceanography. Among geochemical tracers of organic matter in the marine environment we can find the sterols. They are widely distributed in biological systems, which include cyanobacteria, microalgae, phytoplankton (diatoms, coccolithophorids, and dinoflagellates) and zooplankton. This study reports the distribution of biogenic sterols in sediments cores (corresponding last 1k year) from Cabo Frio, Southeast Atlantic, Brazil, and discusses the relationship between theses biomarkers with possible sources (marine and/or terrestrial) along past time. In the Cabo Frio region, a coastal upwelling - downwelling process is presented as a quasi-seasonal phenomenon, characterised by nutrient-rich bottom waters that intrude on the continental shelf promoting high biological productivity that is also recorded in the sediments which are very rich in marine organic matter. In the north, few rivers contribute for the local terrigenous matter supply. Four box cores were collected during two cruises of the R.V. Prof. W. Besnard. The cores were subsampled continuously at intervals of 2 cm. Sterols were determined by GC-MS after ultrasonic extraction, clean up and derivatization to form TMS-ethers. A slight variation in sterols concentration could be verified but it did not correspond to important variations in sedimentation and sea water temperature. (continua...)(... continuação) Therefore, It was notpossible evaluate if these sterols amounts are result from these oceanographic changes or a regular fluctuation in time. The selected sterols indicated the presence of predominantly marine organic matter, represented by high concentration of cholesterol, cholestanol and brassicasterol and confirmed by low values to the C/N. Only one site seems to received amounts of terrestrial organic matter explained because the vicinity with continent. The PCA analyses showed that it indicates marine sources, as e.g., cholesterol, cholestanol and dinosterol.
