- Abstract: Natural radionuclides have been widely used as tracers for the investigation of open ocean processes and coastal zone management. Their applications both in oceanographic studies and marine contamination studies have been helping to better comprehend the processes in the water column (particle transport, carbon cycle, biogeochemical cycling, scavenging processes) or sediment dynamics processes (sinking, deposition, accumulation, transport and re-suspension). However, the assessment of natural radioactivity levels and applications of nuclear and isotopic techniques in studies performed in Brazilian coastal area have not been as numerous as those in the northern hemisphere. As a result of the IAEA Co-ordinated Research Programme implementation on "Nuclear and Isotopic Techniques for the Charactherization of Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) in Coastal Zones", the assessment of natural radioactivity levels in groundwater, seawater, rivers and sediment was performed in São Paulo Bight from January 2002 to August 2005. The São Paulo Bight is the arc-shaped part of southeastern Brazilian Margin extending from 23°S to 28°S. All samples studied in this work were taken in the selected area between latitudes 23°15' S and 25°50' S and longitudes 44° W and 46° W. This paper will present and discuss the natural radioactivity results compiled over the last 4 years. These data includes the assessment of U, 234Th, 228Th, 222Rn, Ra isotopes and 7Be in groundwater andseawater samples, Ra isotopes in rivers and U, 234Th, 228Th, 226Ra, 228Ra, 7Be in sediment. Since Brazil has the longest inter and subtropical coastline in the world, extending for around 8,000 km, the application of these radionuclides in hydrology, coastal oceanography and geochemistry studies will enhance the national understanding of groundwater-seawater interactions in the coastal zone, helping environmental managers to identify specific problem areas and its potential resulting impact on local ecosystems.
