- Abstract: Ostracodes are nowadays important proxies to Cenozoic oceanographic studies because their sensitivity to environmental parameters and suitability for geochemical analyses. The main objective of the present work has been to study the bathymetric distribution of Late Quaternary bathyal ostracodes from Santos Basin and assess the physico-chemical conditions that influenced it. The Santos basin lies on the southeast Brazilian margin in a region under influence of the Brazil Current. The 60 samples studied have been taken from three cores: SAN 26 (23°42'S/42°21,1' W; 384 m water depth), SAN 23 (23°49,5'S/42°17,8' W; 630 m water depth) and SAN 65 (24°03,3'S/41°54,9'W; 1130 m water depth). The whole assemblage of each core was studied both on its taxonomic and taphonomic aspects. The last glacial maximum (LGM), postglacial and Holocene were established according foraminifer Cibicidoides oxygen isotopic data from the deepest core (SAN 65). Additionally, Mg/Ca analysis on carapaces of genus Krithe, which has a good paleotemperature equation, and faunal turnovers recorded were also considered to propose those divisions. Geochemical analyses indicate that SAN 65 core section covers the marine isotopic stages (MIS) 1, 2 and 3 and that important hydrological changes took place, prompting noticeable ostracode faunal changes probably resulted from slope vertical migration. This study shows the goodresults given when multiproxies (oxygen isotopes, trace elements ratio andmicrofossils faunal) are used in paleoceanographic studies.
