- Abstract: Introduction and Objectives: Experimental and epidemiological data have shown that malnutrition predisposes individuals to infections and compromise the immune response. Undernutrition in critical periods of gestation can lead to program permanent alterations in body structure and metabolism and thereby to cardiovascular and metabolic disease in adult life. Asthma is a complex disease characterized by a specific pattern of inflammation in the airways, involving eosinophils, airway hyperreactivity and mucus production. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the intrauterine undernutrition on pulmonary allergic inflammation, in 8 and 12 week-old rats. Methods and Results: Intrauterine nourished (NR) and undernourished (UR ) male Wistar rats were immunized with OVA/alumen (10µg/1.6 mg, i.p.), and challenged 14 and 21 days later by exposure to OVA aerosol (2,5%, 20min).After 24h of the second challenge, bronchoalveolar lavage was performed for analysis of cells and lungs were removed for evaluation of airway reactivity to methacholine or mucus production (PAS staining of lung slices). Additionally, serum anti-OVA IgE titers were assayed based on the PCA (passive cutaneous anaphylaxis) method. In 8 week-old NR and UR, no difference was observed in eosinophil infiltration, airways hyperreactivity and mucus production; however, PCA reaction was reduced in 80% in UR. In 12 week-old rats, we observed reducedeosinophil infiltration (44%), mucus production (70%), and PCA reaction (91%) in UR. The airways hyperreactivity was not different between both groups. Conclusion: The intrauterine undernutrition caused reduction in the pulmonary allergic inflammation in 12 week-old rats, but not in 8 week-old rats; therefore, age is a determinant factor in reducing the airways inflammation in intrauterine undernourished rats.
