Oral health education: the local health facilitators in the western timor and the toothbrush of coconut and bamboo fibers (2006)

- Abstract: The scenario is a house comprised of 6 people and a sole toothbrush available for all, with no hygiene conditions and basic sanitation. The Sorrir - Alcançando Vidas Project (Smile - reaching for lives),in 2005, began its activities in the Western Timor, with an 8-volunteer team from Maringá, PR, aiming at reviewing the above described scenario. The goal was to arouse the interest of the locals as for oral health prevention and education, focusing on the familial nucleus and the individual, by forming health facilitators, so as to improve social inclusion. In the Western Timor, 8 women and a Norwegian female nurse were qualified and the material developed in Brazil was translated into the local language, so as to available to all. A toothbrush made out coconut and bamboo fibers was made, tested and approved, thus effectively improving the brushing. The challenges were: the native languages, the TETUM and the Indonesian BAHASA; the habit of chewing a leaf called AHO, and a seed named BUA along with MALOS (chalk powder) in order to relieve hunger; instruct them and modify habits without interfering in their culture. Some 50 families were visited in 15 days and theatrical events, puppet shows and other forms of entertainment were accomplished with the goal of teaching them brushing procedures and motivating them to improve their health conditions. The women from Timor were the health and oral hygiene instructors, guiding as for the self-care and changing habits in theirown families, as well. It was concluded that the benefits will be better observed in the generations to come, and that it is not possible to promote health without considering the individual in an integral way, since health is the reflex of socio-environmental relations and conditions
