Epidemiological profile of dental caries in teenagers in southwest area of São Paulo state, Brazil (2006)

- Abstract: The oral health in the most of Brazilians cities is a challenge to National Health System (SUS). This study aim to analyze the prevalence of dental caries (DMFT index), Significant Caries Index (SiC) and the percentages of caries-free in adolescents in Itaí-SP - Brazil, in 2006. The methodology used are in agreement with WHO criteria. The study sample was composed by 178 teenagers. This number corresponds to 46% of the 12-years-old adolescents that reside in the city. The sample was collected by a randomized manner. Kappa test was calculated intra-examiner and it was obtained agreement values of 0.95. Analysis of accumulated disease frequency in relation to the population showed that 34% of adolescents presented 70% of all the tooth diseases. The DMFT index was 2.45, the SiC index was 5.08, and the frequency of caries-free adolescents was 30%. These distributions demonstrate the phenomenon of polarization in the sample studied. The data obtained show the decrease of dental caries in 12- years-old adolescents, but this was not uniform. The problems are concentrated in a small portion of the population
