- Abstract: A recuperação da informação e obtenção de documentos, como atividade indispensável no ambiente de ensino, pesquisa e assistência à saúde, para busca de atualização acadêmica e de prestação de serviços, tem passado por mudanças no que se refere ao acesso e as formas de obtenção desses documentos, decorrentes, principalmente da adoção e uso de novas tecnologias. Cabe às bibliotecas e aos profissionais da informação em saúde, intermediar esse processo, disponibilizando produtos de qualidade aos seus usuários. O trabalho aborda a evolução da recuperação de documentos, especialmente artigos científicos, na Biblioteca Central do Serviço de Biblioteca e Documentação da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo - BC/SBD/FMUSP, São Paulo, Brasil. Relata e analisa as diversas formas de obtenção de artigos em textos completos, respondendo às necessidades e à crescente demanda informacional de seus usuários, para fins acadêmicos e de pesquisa, no Complexo Faculdade de Medicina e Hospital das Clínicas - FMUSP/HC. São os esforços e ações da BC/SBD/FMUSP na utilização dos serviços de comutação bibliográfica (SCAD - BIREME e COMUT - IBICT) além da forma on-line. Nesse sentido analisa tanto a utilização dos Portais (CAPES e SIBiNET) que possibilitam a recuperação, como o acesso a títulos de periódicos eletrônicos em texto completo (OVID - dot.lib), assinados pelo Serviço de Biblioteca e Documentação a partir de 2002, e renovados anualmente, de acordo com estudo deacessos realizados em cada um deles. Dados numéricos resultantes desta prestação de serviço revelam que, à medida em que cresce o número de títulos de periódicos eletrônicos disponíveis, também aumenta a obtenção dos artigos on-line, em detrimento das formas convencionais, no formato impresso; indicando ainda que, embora a recuperação seja eletrônica, o suporte preferido para leitura continua sendo a impressão em papel (Contínua) ) O acompanhamento da evolução dessas práticas, fornece ao SBD/FMUSP, subsídios para decisões sobre o dimensionamento dos serviços e a configuração do parque tecnológico, sempre com o propósito de corresponder às expectativas e necessidades de pesquisas bibliográficas dos usuários
