- Abstract: Objetivo: A marked decrease in analytical and post-analytical variability has taken place in clinical laboratories with automated analytical systems. Studies are now focused on the origin of pre analytical errors, mainly the intra-individual biological components. In this study the occurrence of biological rhythms in several biochemica serum parameters in a Brazilian adult population was evaluated. We also looked into sex and age effects on the presence of rhythms. Métodos e Resultados: A retrospective study was carried out to collect the test results within the reference intervals of adult individuals (21 to 50 years old) assisted at the outpatient clinics of the Teaching Hospital at the University of Campinas, Sao Paulo, during the years of 1996 to 1998. The biochemical parameters analyzed and the total number of exams performed were: 53.641 for urea, 58.315 for creatinine, 6.433 for uric acid, 15.036 for calcium and 7.478 for phosphorus, totalizing 140.903 measurements. Parametric statistical analyses were carried out through the SAS. Cosinor method was applied to the time series. The population comprised 52.9% males and 47.1% females with a mean age for a three-year period equal to 36 years. A significant seasonal rhythm with a 12-month period was observed in serum calcium, ph0.001, with maximum and minimum values in fall and in spring respectively, and in serum creatinine, ph0.002, with maximum and minimum values in summer and in winter respectively. Theother parameters did not present significant circannual rhythmicity. Conclusões: The biological rhythms in dosages of serum calcium and creatinine should be considered a significant cause of pre-analytical variation of these laboratory tests
