- Abstract: The initial breach of the outer mitochondrial membrane may appear literally punctual and openings of this membrane in the range of ~ 30, ~ 50 and ~ 100 nm are observable. To cover the expanding swollen matrix the inner membrane utilizes membrane organized in the cristae. The initial small sized aperture of the outer membrane is preceded by a localized intermembranous swelling. The initial small sized aperture of the outer mitochondrial membrane correlates, with the immunoelectronmicroscopic demonstration of clusters of particles signaling the presence of Bax molecules tightly adhering to restrict segments of the outer membrane in apoptotic cells (Nechushtan et al. J C Biol 153,1265, 2001; de Giorgi et al. FASEB J ,16, 607, 2002). In the majority of culture experiments (n = 24) the percentage of cells with normal nuclei and expressing MPT varied from 1 to 24%, these percentages correlated positively (n=37 r2 = 0.60; p< 0.0001) with the percentage of cells of the same culture with apoptotic nuclei

Abstracts. 2004 ;[citado 2026 mar. 15 ] - The frequent rupture of the outer mitochondrial membrane seen in apoptotic cells results of the loss of the selective permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane wich covers a swollen mitochondrial matrix herniating, through yhe rupture, to the cytoplasm. This is the morphology of the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT)
