Morphometric study of hamster pancreas growth during the early postnatal period (2003)

- Abstract: The growth of the Syrian golden hamster pancreas during the first 4 weeks of postnatal life was studied by morphometric methods. The absolute number of cells in each morphological compartment of the pancreas and the mean volume of the acinar cells were determined. Pancreatic volume increased by 2,892% from day 2 to day 21, while no statistically significant increase was observed between days 21 an 28. The increase in cell numbers was analysed using exponential equations and the growth rates (doubling time) calculated using the respective equations were 3.30, 4.08, 4.33, 3.65, 3.85 and 5.78 days for the acinar, centroacinar, intercalated duct, excretory duct, Langerhans islet and stromal cells, respectively. Thus, acinar, excretory duct and islet cells proliferated faster than the centroacinar, intercalated duct and stromal cells between 2 and 21 days of age. During the same period, the mean acinar cell volume increased by 72.5%, while the total volume of the acinar cell population increased by 7,320%. Analysis of these data showed that at the beginning of the neonatal period acinar cell proliferation predominated over an increased in cell volume, whereas at the end of this period both events contributed equally to the final increase observed
