Decorin and biblycan during mouse organogenesis (2003)

- Abstract: Decorin and biglycan are small leucin-rich proteoglycans (SLRPs). These molecules mediate essential structural attributes of the extracellular matrix and act as tissue organizers by the ability to associate to collagen fibrils in the extracellular matrix. Moreover, both molecules are able to interact with soluble TGF-beta in the tissues and, have been implicated in the control of a variety of cell activities during ontogenesis. Our goal is to determine the patterns of expression of decorin and biglycan during mouse organogenesis. Mouse embryos on 9-15 days of development were used. Samples were immunocytochemically stained for detection of decorin and biglycan using the streptavidin/peroxidase method. Decorin and biglycan were expressed in the developing nervous system, vasculature, heart, gastrointestinal tract, urogenital system, integumentary system, sense organs, and skeletal and muscular systems.Decorin was abundant in developing tissues of mesenchymal origin. In contrast, biglycan was expressed in both mesenchymal and epithelial tissues. Both decorin and biglycan increased from the embryonic period to the fetal development suggesting that these two SLRPs may play a role in epithelial/mesenchymal interactions during morphogenesis
