- Abstract: The purpose of this work was to investigate signs indicative of pain in newborn babies. Sixty full-term healthy newborns were videotape prior to and during intramuscular vitamin K injection and PKU screening of blood samples. A detailed analysis of facial movements and crying showed that babies react to painful stimuli with similar patterns and intensity under both procedures. A shorter latency of response, both in crying and facial movements, was observed in the babies born through normal delivery as compared with those born through caesarean. The assumption that neonates do not feel pain is thus not supported by this study. These findings have significant implications for neonatal nursing care
