- Abstract: We consider exact F tests for null variance components under two common mixed models employed for the analysis of two facto r problems with unbalanced data. We show that, under the so-called unconstrained parameter (UP) model, the test statistics are obtained by direct application of the transformations proposed by Õfversten (Biometrics, 1993). We consider additional transformations to obtain the corresponding test statistics under the constrained parameter (CP) model and show that they coincide with the usual F statistics constructed from ANOVA type 111mean squares. We study the power of such tests under different unbalance patterns and show that although the loss of power increases with the degree of unbalancedness, it still remains reasonable trem a practical point of view.
