Effect of strenous exercise on aging of cardiac neurons (2002)

- Abstract: Objective: In this work, we investigate the manner in which cardiac neurons adapts to strenuous training. Methods and Results: Three mo-old rats were subjected to intensive treadmill running 3 days/wk, for 16 m/min up a 10º slope. This training intensity and duration were maintained for 10 and 15 months. Five other 3 mo-old animals were used as control. Rats aged 15 and 18 mo were killed with an overdose of ether. Neurons in the cardiac plexus have been visualized by an enzyme histochemical method in laminar praparations of the atrial complex. Neuron sizes were recorded in the preparations using a camera lucida adapted to the light microscope.The results show that there was a decrease in the size of the neurons in the running rats in relation to the control group in both ages. Conclusion: Strenuous training in adults and aging rats alter the size of the neurons of cardiac rats
