- Abstract: Objetivo: In birds, as well as in mammals, the hippocampus is required for many forms of memory. Relatively litle is known about the cellular basis of memory in pigeons. In the present study we intended to analyze the neural mechanisms underlying the acquisition of aversive classical conditioning in pigeons by studying the expression of the product of the immediate early gene zyf268 after the training session. Métodos e Resultados: Pigeons were submitted to three sound (1000-Hz, 83 dB, 1s) and shock (10 mA, 1s) associations during one 20 min session (GET). Control pigeons were exposed only to the context (GCC), sound (GCS)or manipulation (GCM). The analysis compared the immunoreactive labeled cells in the hippocampus of the GET, GCC and GCS birds with those observed for the GCM birds. The comparisons (where GCM=100%)revealed enhanced expression of zif268 in the hippocampus of the experimental birds (Medial Hippocampus: 175,9%; Lateral Hippocampus: 132,3%; Dorsal Hippocampus: 168,3%), in the context-control group (Medial Hippocampus: 122,3%; Lateral Hippocampus: 129,9%; Dorsal Hippocampus: 134,2%)and control-sound group (Medial Hippocampus: 132,6%; Lateral Hippocampus: 100,9%; Dorsal Hippocampus: 143,2%). Conclusões: The observation that the short term expression of zif268 after sound-shock conditioning is increased points to a role of the hippocampus in this process of learning in pigeons. The fact that the zif268 was also expressed in the hippocampus of pigeonsexposed only to the context seems to be consistent with previous analysis related to the mammal and avian hippocampus during context conditioning. The present data point to the interest of further investigation of the long-term expression of zif268 in the hippocampus of pigeons after the test sessions both to the context and to the sound
