- Abstract: Objective: We investigated the precision with which penalty kickers could hit pre-set targets that would either fall or not within their physiological blind spot. Methods and Results: Five members of the University of São Paulo first men's soccer team participated in this study (ages ranged from 19 to 21, SD=0.7). They had to kick an soccer ball, with the internal part of their preferred foot, towards one of several targets horizontally disposed on a metal grid, at 11 m from the ball. The targets were five white cardboard circles 0.22 m in diameter, all at a height of 1.70 m. There were distributed within a frame made of white cloth with the shape and dimensions of an official soccer goal (a strip 0.10 m wide, forming vertical posts 2.44 m high, topped by a horizontal crossbar, 7.32 m across). The central target was in the middle of the goal and the proximal and distal lateral targets were positioned respectively at 1.46 m and 2.92 m of the distance, on both sides. The volunteers were instructed to look only at the ball or to a specific target throughout the approach to the ball. Furthermore they were asked to strive looking up at the predetermined target at the moment of contact with the ball, rather than looking down at the ballVolunteers with right ocular dominance were asked to fixate the lateral proximal target to their left, whereas volunteers with left ocular dominance were asked to fixate the lateral proximal target to their right (the blind spot ofthe dominant eye covered the ipsilateral proximal lateral target when the kicker was on the penalty mark). The data hint at a decrement in performance as a function of increased eccentricity from one to three. The point at zero eccentricity however, suggests that this is not a reliable trend. The mean distance to the target for the four eccentricities were 0.89 m, 0.74 m, 0.87 m and 0.96 m respectively. The ANOVA showed no effect of eccentricity [F(3,196)=1.6, p>0.1]. Conclusion: The precision was not significantly affected either by eccentricity (angle between the visual target and the target the ball was aimed at) nor by the fact that for one of the eccentricities the target fell within the blind spot of the dominant eye
