- Abstract: Human enteric viruses were detected in sewage, surface and underground water worldwide. However, to estimate the risk of this findings for the public health many informations about the types of viruses and numbers of infection units, which are circulating, and seasonal occurrence need to be known. HAV outbreaks associated to the comsuption of contaminated water occur, but the numbers are underestimate in most countries. The aim of the present study was to report the occurrence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) in sewage and surface water in São Paulo city. A total of 43 samples of raw sewage and sewage-polluted creek water were collected at two different sites in city of São Paulo through July 1998 to June 1999: Sewage Pumping Station Edu Chaves and Creek Pirajussara, located onorth and south districts of the city, respectively. Four-liter samples were submitted to a two-step concentration procedure based on filtration through a microporous electropositive charged filter membrane (Zeta Plus 60S) and ultracentrifugation. HAV were detected by RT-PCR technique using the primers HAVC-R and HAVC-L, designed by De Leon et al. (1990) for the amplification of a 192 bp fragment, corresponding to the interface of V1-VP3 genes. HAV were detected in 23 (53.5%) out of 43 examined samples by RT-PCR, followed by reamplification reaction in sewage and creek water through out the year
