- Abstract: Structure and composition of the different vessels represent a major information for a better understanding of the physiology and physiopatology of the arterial diseases. In order to determine differences in various coronary arteries segments we studied coronary arteries and their branches by a light microscopy protocol. Different staining were performed in arterial fragments obtained from post-mortem adult individuals from both genders and different races who had not had clinical symptoms of coronary artery disease. In the left coronary artery (LCA) and in the proximal segments of right coronary artery (RCA) and anterior interventricular artery (AIVA) we have not found a clear internal elastic limitante (IEL) but an important intimal thickness with the presence of smooth muscle cells (myofibroblasts) and a great amount of foam cells. In the intermediary and distal segments of the RCA, the IEL have presented many fenestrations. The IEL of the intermediary segment of the AIVA was formed by at least two elastic layers. This characteristic may offer a selective barrier not only for the diffusion of different substances from the lumen but also for the migration of smooth muscle cells from the media during the atherosclerotic process. It would represent a negative affecting factor for intimal proliferation and thickness. Fenestration in the IEL and the reduced number of elastic layers in the IEL may act synergically in the progression of the atherosclerotic process
