- Abstract: A decision support system for death prediction in intensive care units was developed using discriminant analysis as a modeling tool. The data feeding the system consist of demographic and clinical variables gathered at the time of admission to the unit and of information generated by the occurrence of certain relevant events during the patient's stay. The system was implemented in C++ language and runs on Pentium-based machines under Windows NT 4.0. After the implementation the system was validated using a large number of cases relative to three years of operation of an intensive care unit and it predicted correctly the terminal status for 75% of the incoming patients and for 77% of the staying patients
