Cranial morphological variation in South America and the colonization of the new world: towards a four migration model? (1999)

- Abstract: O cenário mais aceito sobre a ocupação da América está muito bem expresso no modelo das três migrações proposto por Turner II (1). Este modelo se sustenta sobre as suposições de que o continente foi primeiramente ocupado em tempos recentes (há não mais que 12.000 anos), que somente três migrações deram origem a toda diversidade biológica e cultural das populações nativas americanas, e que todas as três migrações são de natureza mongolóide/sinodonte, cujas origens devem ser procuradas no nordeste da Ásia. Sob este modelo, a América do Sul teria sido atingida apenas por uma dessas três migrações, justamente a primeira, mais antiga, denominada Paleoíndia. Alguns trabalhos desenvolvidos recentemente tanto por bio-antropólogossul-americanos, quanto por norte-americanos, de maneira independente, sobre remanescentes ósseos humanos dos períodos Paleoíndio e Arcaico Antigo, demonstram que uma população não-mongolóide também entrou no continente (2,3,4,5), inferindo-sedessa maneira a existência de uma quarta onda migratória, mais antiga. Neste artigo nós examinamos o modelo das três migrações sob a luz da morfologia craniana de nativos sul-americanos, cobrindo um período de tempo de aproximadamente 12.000 anos. Se o modelo de Turner II estiver correto, espera-se encontrar que toda a diversidade morfológica craniana no sub-continente pode ser acomodada sob um único grande padrão morfológico. Análises estatísticas uni, bi e multivariadas extensasdemonstram, entretanto, que a diversidade morfológica craniana na América do Sul reparte-se em dois grandes padrões morfológicos. Esses resultados sugerem que em algum momento do período Arcaíco a morfologia craniana na América do Sul sofreu uma mudança dramática, que pode ser melhor explicada por um processo de substituição populacional. Isto questiona severamente a eficácia do modelo das três migrações para explicar a diversidade morfológica no subcontinente
