- Abstract: Clinical and radiographic data from patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) lesions are statisfactory to the determination of a differential diagnosis. However, conventional radiography does not reveal details of such lesion (Wampler et al.1980). Also, all radiographic projections of the TMJ have limitations, and multiple incidences are associated with incrased radiation dosage(Muir, C. and Goss, A. N., 1990). Anatomopathological characteristics of TMJ lesions have been reported,included microanatomic analysis of their suraface (Luz et al., 1994), but some aspects of their nature remain unlcear. A comparative study between radiographic observations and macroscopic changes of TMJ removed at autopsy showed the presence ofhard tissue lesions where the articular surfaces appeared macroscopically normal (Bean et al., 1977). During surgical management of patients with osteoarthrosis and other serious problems we are able to obtain a good view of the joint and toretreieve specimens of the condyle for radiographic study , as well as for histologic examination.
