- Abstract: Purpose: With the objective of determing whether the first optic ganglion of the bee visual system in engaged in color porcessing, lamina monopolar cells of two bee species Melipona quadrifasciata and Apis mellifera (Souza et al J. Comp. Physiol A170: 267-274, 1992). were recorded from and stained intracellularly. Method: Spectral sensivity (S)) was measured by the dinamic constant-response method (Souza, et al IOVS 34 (4): 1322, 1993) and Lucifer Yellow-CH injected iontophoretically. Results. (S (À) funcitons in L1 (n=17) and L2 (n=17) monopolar cell types, as well as in unstained cells (n=111), were indistinguishable from that of the green photorecpetor. Most had double peaks at 512-516 and 544 nm. A single unstained cell possibly an L3, peaked in the blue (420 nm: average 0f 4 scans); another unstained cell was spectrally opponent. Dark adapted V/log I functions in 41 lamina cells in Melipona were on average 59% steeper than those of photoreceptors. Light driven spikes superimposed on the graded hyperpolarizing response occurred at light on in 8/25 L1 and in 4/21 L2 cells; at light off in 3/25 L1s and 2/21 L2s. Spontaneous spikes found in three cells were inhibited at on, and at off in one cell . Current injection revealed resistance reductions at peak response (4-12 M) wich are similar to those measured in the fly. Angular sensitivites (3-5) were approximately the same as for the photoreceptors. Conclusions: Lamina monopolar cells retransmit photoreceptor inputs to the medulla in separate channels. With the possible exception of the opponent cell, there is thus no evidence of color processing in the lamina
