- Abstract: This thesis is concerned with the development of mathematical software for the numerical simulation of time-dependent incompressible free surface flows. A finite difference technique for solving the full two-dimensional navier-stokes equations in general domains has been developed and implemented. The code, named gensmac, is an update version of the smac (simplified marker-and-cell) method. A variety of free surface flow problems in complicated domains in considered. In addition, gensmac has been used to investigate several fluid flow patterns which can occur during the cavity filling process. A detailed study of this problem is presented. With the aim of determining the transient pressure drop in a penstock a procedure for simulating the head gate closure has been developed for solving the generalized newtonian model. This procedure has been added to gensmac and has permited us to simulate the die-swell of a non-newtonian fluid. Finally a methodology for calculating the fluid free surface using marker-an
