- Resumo: In order to detect possible individual differences in the development of sleep/wake rhythmicity it seems desirable to control intervening variables as much as possible. Identical twins may constitute a good model to detect the appearance of such differences. There are no reports on the evolution of the sleep/wake cycle (SWC) in identical twins to our knowledge. A pair of identical healthy twins (girls), born at gestational age of 38wks, were continuously observed by their mother and had all sleep and feeding episodes recorded in a diary for six consecutive months starting at the fourth week of life. The twins slept in the same independent room and their caregivers were the same persons. Feeding episodes occurred upon self-demand.Analyses were performed in blocks of seven consecutive days. In each of these blocks sleep and feeding episodes were transformed in two binary time series (awake=1/sleep=-1 and feeding=1/non-feeding=-1), each time point represented the prevailing state in 10min intervals. The time series were analyzed by means of Ciclograma (Diambra, Lopes & Menna-Barreto, Chronob. Int., 19[4], 2002) and Lomb-Scargle Periodogram. Measures of sleep durations and index of simultaneity of the SWC, as well as measures of awakenings tendencies of nursing were also used. We found remarkable similarities in the evolution of the circadian component of the SWC for the two girls, but not in the evolution of the ultradian components, probably in function of the feeding cycle.
