- Abstract: Theta rhythm (jung and Kornhuber 1938. Green & Arduni 1954; Vanderwolf 1969; Timo-laria et al, 1970; Valle 1992; Staubi & Scafidi 1999; Glassman 1999; Kahana et al 2003) is a hippocampal characteristic oscillation typical of alert waking and desynchronized (a.k.a. REM, PS) sleep that ranges from 5.5 to 11 Hz. In this study, adult male rats (n=20) were submitted to an operant conditioning paradigm with four steps (modeling, continous reinforcement variable intervals of reinforcement and discrimination. On the fourth step, rats learned to seek reinforcement only when lights were on. The learning schedule consisted of 15 daily sessionsof one hour. At the end of this training, animals were implanted with electrodes on neocortical areas A10, A3 and A17, hippocanpus CA1, CA2 and CA3, and mygdala nBI. We found that the speed of learning on the fourth operants step was positivetly correlated with the frequency of theta waves during both alert waking and desynchronized sleep (r=0.52; p=0.02). Therefore, the higher the frequency of theta waves, the higher the speed learning. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a direct relationship between the capacity for learning and the speed of theta rhythm
