- Resumo: Objetivo: We showed previously that training (T) induces adaptive responses in the skeletal muscle circulation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) such as increase in capillary and venule density and remodeling of arterioles (Amaral et al, J Hypertens, 2000; 2001). Hind limb blood flow (HLF) responses following T are not well known. We sought to investigate the effect of hypertension and chronic exercise in HLF dynamics. Métodos e Resultados: Male SHR and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) aged 2 months were allocated to T (60% of maximal exercise capacity) for 13 weeks, while age-matched sedentary (S) rats served as control. Rats were chronically instrumented (4 days) with an iliac flow probe (Transonic) and 1 day before the experiment with an arterial catheter. Systolic pressure (SP), heart rate (HR) and HLF were acquired continuously (Codas, 2000Hz) in conscious rats at rest. Power spectral analysis was applied to basal HLF using Welch method (a FFT model) to quantify power spectrum density in 2 main components: low frequency (LF, 0.2-0.8 Hz) and high frequency (HF, 0.8-3.0 Hz).SHRS presented elevated SP, HR and increased peak HLF when compared to WKYS (increases of 43%, 23% and 35% over 122+-4 mmHg, 301+-11 b/min and 4.3+-0.7 ml/min, respectively). Although T significantly reduced HR in both groups, SP and HLF reductions were observed only in SHRT. Interestingly, HLF of SHRT was back to control levels (from 6.7+-0.7 to 5.0+-0.7 ml/min). Treduced LF and HF components of HLF variability in both groups (average of -72% and -58% for SHR and WKY), but significant changes were attained only by the SHR group (LF from 0.115+-0.02 to 0.03+-0.01; HF from 0.151+-0.03 to 0.04+-0.02 [ml/min]2, pConclusões: Results show the feasibility of spectral analysis applied to peripheral blood flow to evaluate the effects of hypertension and training on the control of skeletal muscle resistance. In addition, the specific decrease of HLF magnitude and variability only in the trained SHR is in agreement with training-induced adjustments previously described in SHR skeletal muscle circulation.
