- Abstract: Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems have been associated with health complains related to poor indoor air quality, due to multiple causes. They include mould contamination of the system and the increase of fungi spores exposure to the buildings occupants. There is no consensus regarding performance of sanitation methods for different fungi genera and contamination levels of the HVAC system. Thirty HVAC systems were randomicaly selected for the sanitation. It consisted of mechanical removal of dust and water and soap cleaning of the drip pans. Pre and post fungi exposure were evaluated counting viable fungi spores with a six stage Andersen sampler. Outdoor air was used as control to indoor air spore counts. Wilcoxon Rank Test was used to compare pre and post values and Mann Witney U Test was used to compare the indoor post intervention and control spore counts. To evaluate the efficacy of the intervention, the correlation coefficient between initial spores count and the difference of the counts before and after the intervention was calculated using the Pearson correlation Test. The total amount of viable indoor fungi and Cladosporium sp were not significantly reduced after the sanitation (p=0.160 and 0.152). The rest of fungi genera were effectively reduced by sanitation procedures and the effectiveness of the sanitation procedure was directly correlated with the pre sanitation mould counts. The efficiency of the sanitation procedure was conditioned tothe fungi genera profile presented on the pre sanitation samples. Total spore counts and Cladosporium sp may not be a good biological indicator for mould contamination
