- Abstract: INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of antibodies to parvovirus B19 in adults is of about 50% in Japan and 60-70% in England and Wales, in Chile 44%, in Czech Republic 44%,in India 50%, in Brazil and Niger a higher prevalence has been found with more than 80% parvovirus B19 antibody positive in children with 10 years of age. OBJETIVE: Determination the immunological profile the Parvovirus B19 IgG antibody in a population. METHODS AND MATERIALS The samples of sera were obtained from the town of Caieiras in 1990-1991 from 435 healthy people between the ages less than 1 month and 40 years.IgG antibody was detected by enzyme immunoassay ELISA the Biotrin. RESULTS: Higher prevalence of IgG antibody to B19 parvovirus has been found to be more than 87% in the newly-born with less than 1 month of age and waning levels of motherly -derived antibody were found in infants, during the first month until 4 years of age, showing a falling curve of motherly antibodies. The results are discussed in relation to possible mechanisms generating such a profile. CONCLUTION: There has been a progressive increase in the proportion of the seropositives with age coming to a higher seroprevalence of IgG positive of 72% observed in the age structure of 5-40 years. Parvovirus B19 IgG antibody prevalence was analysed by age structure and showed a similar patter to that described in USA, which is in agreement with previous studies relating with a low seroprevalence in children andincreased with age in older people
