Perguntas frequentes

  1. 1. What is the USP Production Repository (ReP)?

ReP is the institutional and official repository of the University of São Paulo that records and stores digital publications resulting from research and the scientific, artistic, academic, and technical output of its authors, departments, units, institutes, centers, museums, and central bodies. It is also known as the Digital Library of the Intellectual Production of the University of São Paulo (BDPI).

  2. 2. What are the objectives of the USP Production Repository?

ReP aims to: (a) Increase the visibility, accessibility, and dissemination of digital content from academic and research activities of the university through the collection, organization, recording, and preservation of its institutional memory; (b) Facilitate the management and access to information on USP’s research output by providing reliable and validated indicators; (c) Contribute to the preservation, use, and scientific, academic, and social impact of the knowledge produced at the university, integrating with other national and international initiatives.

  3. 3. Why was the name 'USP Production Repository' adopted?

The name 'USP Production Repository' was adopted to make it easier for the end user to identify. In addition, it aligns with the terminology used by most national and international universities, including UNESP and UNICAMP.

  4. 4. What types of documents are in ReP and what is the coverage period?

The repository includes journal articles and research-derived materials, including scientific, academic, and outreach works, books and book chapters, conference papers, as well as theses and dissertations available in the university’s Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. It covers USP records and documents from its founding in 1934 to the present, along with some historical content predating its establishment.

  5. 5. What types of searches can I perform in the Repository?

The initial search can be done using a term, author, or title and can be refined using 'Filters' by USP Unit, document type, author, year of publication, subjects, funding agency, language, publisher, period, etc.

  6. 6. How can I access documents that are not available online?

When an intellectual output is not available in digital format, its metadata will be available in ReP, and a physical copy will be stored in the library of the respective unit. In this way, besides providing access to full-text documents that are openly available online, ReP indicates where to find older materials that have not yet been digitized. Use the CONTACT option: https://repositorio.usp.br/contact.php to check the possibility of accessing the document.

  7. 7. What are the criteria for document registration and deposit?

At least one of the authors must have an institutional affiliation with the University of São Paulo, and the document must contain scientific, academic, artistic, or technical content related to the author’s field at the university. Only research results authored by current or former university researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, or team members are accepted. The deposit can be made non-exclusively, preserving all rights of the document authors and respecting intellectual property.

  8. 8. How to deposit your work and publications in the Repository?

The registration and deposit of digital content in ReP is carried out by cataloging librarians from the Libraries of the Agency of Libraries and Digital Collections (ABCD). Contact the Library team in your Unit for more information and guidance.

  9. 9. What versions of documents can be deposited in ReP?

Peer-reviewed accepted manuscripts and final published open access PDFs can be deposited, provided they comply with publisher and journal policies. The ReP team is strongly committed to respecting copyright and intellectual property. Therefore, if the ReP team is notified of any irregularities, the document will be immediately removed for further review and may be reinstated if no permissions or rights violations are found. To contact us, email: atendimento@abcd.usp.br

  10. 10. Where can I find more information about open access, permissions, and document versions?

This and other relevant information is available at the USP Office of Scholarly Communication (Open Access).

  11. 11. If one of ReP's goals is the preservation of institutional memory, what happens to documents protected by copyright?

All records contain reference information and, whenever available, links to the original documents. Depending on publisher and journal deposit policies, documents in ReP may be open, embargoed, or restricted for preservation purposes. When allowed, documents are publicly available in full-text open access for download. When embargoed, they remain closed for a set period defined by the publisher, after which access is granted. For closed-access documents, only metadata and links are shown.

  12. 12. How does the Repository work internally?

It is an in-house solution customized to USP's characteristics, heavily inspired by Vufind. Using ElasticSearch (a tool for indexing and information retrieval) and PHP (a simple programming language), the Repository is fully compatible with Google. The main idea behind ElasticSearch is to use MARC-formatted records from Dedalus and convert them to JSON (the lightweight standard format used by Elasticsearch), avoiding rework for catalogers. The files (documents) attached to records are stored in DSpace, the deepest layer of the Repository.

  13. 13. Are technical details available to catalogers?

Yes, searches and technical information remain available through filters or via the TECHNICAL SEARCH button located at the bottom of the Repository’s homepage.
